ASTM E84-16 Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials (UL 723, UBC 8-1, NFPA 255)
This report describes the results of the AST E84-16 test for surface burning characteristics of building materials, a method for determining their comparative surface burning behavior. The sample tested was Contego RFB HS Painted Southern Yellow Pine on louvered doors typically used on residential utility closets. What’s remarkable is how well the Contego coating protected even the thin, angled louvers.
SS-EN ISO 16000-10:2006. “Indoor air – Part 10: Determination of the emission of volatile organic compounds from building products”
|Location:||RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB|
Emissions tested after 28 days regarding volatile organic compounds (VOC and VVOC/SVOC), carcinogenic substances (VOC-substances, EU Regulation No 1272/2008 Annex VI, cat 1A and 1B), formaldehyde and acetaldehyde (ISO 16000-3:2011). Evaluation according to CEN/TS 16516:2013 (EU-LCI values).
ASTM D4541-09e1 “Pull-Off Strength of Coatings Using Portable Adhesion Testers”
Our ASTM D-4541 test was conducted September 25, 2013 at KTA and showed over 630 PSI, more than twice that of our closest competitor and four times that of others. Combined with results of our ASTM D3359 test using both the cross cut and ribbon cut methods with 0% loss, nothing beats Contego’s adhesion.
ASTM E-84.98 (UL-723, ANSI A-2.5, NFPA 255 & UBC 8-1 & 42-1)
“Flame Spread and Smoke Production on OSB”
As a control, we applied Contego at a rate of rate of 60 sq. ft./gallon and limited flame spread to 10 and smoke development to 10.
UBC – 26.2 “Test Methods for the Evaluation of Thermal Barriers”
This test is designed to last for 15 minutes with some HUD requirements calling for 20 minutes. The Contego product, applied at a rate of 20 mils (dft) exceeded both requirements and the test terminated shortly thereafter. The specimen was atypically thin (7/16″) and was intentionally split down the middle and gapped 1/8″ to put it at a severe disadvantage.
UBC – 26.3 “Room Fire Test Standard”
After 11 minutes after the start of the test, all indicators – smoke generation, temperature, and threshold heat rise, were all actually declining and continued to decline until the test was terminated.
ASTM D3359 “Standard Methods For Measuring Adhesion by Tape Test”
Using both methods available under ASTM D-3359, adhesion was 100% with 0% paint loss by peeling or removal on a completely nonporous surface.
ASTM E-84.98(UL-723, ANSI A-2.5, NFPA 255 & UBC 8-1 & 42-1) “Flame Spread and Smoke Production on PMDO”
|Test Name:||ASTM E84-04|
We tested Dynea paper fascia overlay on LP’s PMDO Smooth Suffit and limited flame spread to 10 and smoke development to 25 with an application rate of 60 sq. ft./gallon. The paper fascia adds an enormous amount of fuel to the assembly, so the results were particularly outstanding.
UL – 723 (ASTM E-84, ANSI A-2.5, NFPA 255 & UBC 8-1 & 42-1) “Flame Spread and Smoke Production on Douglas Fir” (2 Coats)
This is a standard flame spread and smoke production test. Contego was applied thinner than normally recommended, 2 coats at a spread rate of 145 sq. ft. per gallon, versus our specified 2 coats at 130 sq. ft. per gallon. Regardless, the tests results show an averaged outcome of 0 flame spread and 0 smoke production. Contego gets better flame spread and smoke production results on Douglas Fir plywood than other intumescents get on steel.
NFPA 286 “Standard Methods of Fire Test for Evaluating Contribution of Wall & Ceiling Interior Finish to Room Fire Growth”
Contego passed the 15 minute test well within the limits of thermal performance.
BSS 7239-88 “Test Method for Toxic Gas Generation by Materials On Combustion”
|Location:||Omega Point Laboratories|
We measured toxicity native in the can as well as in a burn condition using a cone colorimeter. The results show that Contego is completely non-toxic. No other product comes close.
ASTM D4017 “Volatile Organic Compound Content”
Contego isn’t a LOW VOC product, it is a NO VOC product with VOC levels too low for currently available technology to detect.
ASTM E283-04 “Test Method for Determining Rate of Air Leakage”
In this test we determine the rate of air leakage through exterior windows, curtain walls and doors.
Sample QC Reports (Other than UL Listing)
Contego is perhaps the only intumescent manufacturer that uses dual redundant QC analysis of our entire production. We use UL, Materials Analytical Services and MAGI to critically evaluate our product on an ongoing basis using spectroflouroscopic analysis. Note how each graph over the past nine years is essentially identical.
