Fire Tests

The testing of Contego’s intumescent coatings is performed by the most recognized independent labs in the industry with each being accredited and certified fire testing laboratories.  All tests apply to both Contego HS RFB and CON-RFB brands.

While Contego does a number of tests in its own laboratories and with foreign laboratories, the only tests posted on its Website are tests that meet these stringent standards.

Contego can be found in the Intertek Directory of Building Products and the UL Product IQ as a Classified product. Contego includes ASTM E-119, UL-263, UL-723, ULc-S101, ULc-S102 as some of the many different standards to which it tests substrates.  Contego has been tested by Intertek and UL and bear the Intertek and UL mark as a Classified product; Intertek and UL are an important part of Contego’s quality control program.

ASTM is the globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards as the actual basis for building code is typically from ASTM International (“ASTM”, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials).  Today, some 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade and build consumer confidence.

All of Contego’s tests are performed by the finest and most recognized fire testing laboratories.

Location: VTEC
Test Date: 04.07.2003

We tested .250 plate steel after welding a flange to the midpoint to compromise the durability. (Flanges are the weak link for almost all intumescents). 73 mils (dft) of coating were applied and the test went to 2:06:00 when the average of the thermocouples exceeded the maximum allowable temperature. The char layer was 6″ thick and completely blanketed the flange.

ASTM E119-20 (UL263, CAN/ULC S101) Standard Fire Test Method for Fire Tests of Building Construction Full Scale Dimensional Lumber Floor/Ceiling (13ft x 19ft OSB, I-Joist Assembly)

Location: Intertek Laboratories
Test Date: 8.30.2022

The test specimen was tested load bearing with a 40 lb/ft2 superimposed load applied in four increments of 25% before the fire exposure, allowing for stabilization of deflection after each increment.

The Contego HS Intumescent was applied at a 40 Mil DFT on the Full Scale Dimensional Lumber Floor/Ceiling (13ft x 19ft OSB, I-Joist Assembly) 2×12 wood joists spaced 16-in. oc 23/32 Category OSB tongue and groove OSB subfloor with 7/8-in. Red Oak flooring planks, tongue and groove installed as finish flooring  met a fire endurance period of 50 minutes before flaming was seen through the top of the sample.

When applying a finish coat to this assembly you will achieve an additional 16 minutes to achieve a 1:06 hour/minute fire resistance as per our ASTM E119/UL263 “The Effect of Top Coat on Contego HS Intumescent RFB” test results.

Location: Underwriters Laboratories
Test Date: 01.03.2007

This is a standard flame spread and smoke production test. Contego was applied thinner than normally recommended, 2 coats at a spread rate of 145 sq. ft. per gallon, versus our specified 2 coats at 130 sq. ft. per gallon. Regardless, the tests results show an averaged outcome of 0 flame spread and 0 smoke production. UBC – 26.2  “Test Methods for the Evaluation of Thermal Barriers”

Location: Omega Point
Test Date: 11.27.2002

This test is designed to last for 15 minutes with some HUD requirements calling for 20 minutes. The Contego product, applied at a rate of 20 mils (dft) exceeded both requirements and the test terminated shortly thereafter. The specimen was atypically thin (7/16″) and was intentionally split down the middle and gapped 1/8″ to put it at a severe disadvantage.

UBC – 26.3  “Room Fire Test Standard”

Location: SwRI
Test Date: 11.05.2002

After 11 minutes after the start of the test, all indicators – smoke generation, temperature, and threshold heat rise, were all actually declining and continued to decline until the test was terminated.

ASTM E-84.98(UL-723, ANSI A-2.5, NFPA 255 & UBC 8-1 & 42-1) “Flame Spread and Smoke Production on PMDO”

Test Name: ASTM E84-04
Location: Intertek
Test Date: 10.06.2005

We tested Dynea paper fascia overlay on LP’s PMDO Smooth Suffit and limited flame spread to 10 and smoke development to 25 with an application rate of 60 sq. ft./gallon. The paper fascia adds an enormous amount of fuel to the assembly, so the results were particularly outstanding.

UL – 723 (ASTM E-84, ANSI A-2.5, NFPA 255 & UBC 8-1 & 42-1)  “Flame Spread and Smoke Production on Douglas Fir” (2 Coats)

Contego gets better flame spread and smoke production results on Douglas Fir plywood than other intumescents get on steel.

ASTM E-119 – 08 “Standard Methods of Fire Tests of Building Construction & Materials”

While concrete is obviously noncombustible, it still builds up thermal energy quickly and then explodes. When the cold side ruptures, the wall collapses.

In this test, which was performed at Guardian Laboratories in New York, we demonstrate that you can protect a concrete block wall for more than 3 hours with a super thin coat of Contego. Even with a top coat, Contego provides protection that you can trust.

ULc-S101/UL-263  “Full Scale on Structural Steel – 3 hours”

Location: Intertek Laboratories, Coquitlam, BC CANADA
Test Date: 01.20.2012

This was a full scale test using two sizes of beams and decking with 4” of concrete. The concrete was placed in segmented panels with a 1” gap to avoid the supportive effect that would happen with one contiguous pour. It was then loaded with an additional 1038 lbs/lf using hydraulic jacks. The test went to 174 minutes restrained for the lighter beams and decking and 176 minutes for the heavier section.
